House Education Committee approves plan
to increase math, science requirements
The House Education Committee today approved
a plan to increase high school math and science
graduation requirements. The committee voted
16 to 2 in favor of the state Board of Education's
plan, which would require all students to take
three years of math and three years of science
in order to graduate. The Senate Education Committee
approved the plan Monday. State Board Executive
Director Dwight Johnson said he's confident
budget-writers will agree to pay for the plan,
which would cost $1.5 million in the first year.
